It is a well documented fact that the Dahomeans participated in the slave trade as a measure of “self defense.” They had sworn among themselves never to sell any one from their ethnic group (THE AJA) into slavery.

Unfortunately, towards the end of the eighteenth century, the kingdom of Dahomey fell under the Agongolo’s dynasty.

King Agongolo (1789-1797), his eldest son King A-Dandozan or Da- Ndozan (1797-1818).
King A-Dandozan seized power. In the process, he violated the oath of the AJA and he sold into slavery all the AJA that opposed his illegal grab of power, including members of the nobility as well as members of his own family.
In 1806 four thousand Dahomeans of Royal Blood, many of them from the lineage of Houebadja-(1645-1685) Father of King AGADJA (Gadja-Bossou -1708-1732) fell victim to the heinous act of king A Dandozan . They were sold into slavery and were brought to Haiti by an English trader.
Henri Christophe, king of Haiti, negotiated their freedom and used them as his personal guards and entrusted them with the upkeep of the affairs of his court.
When King Henri Christophe died, they followed their leader ALLUDA MUGNON into the Vallée de l’Artibonite. There, they founded their own village and called it “SOUVENANCE”
